A Look Into New Bern, North Carolina, Craven County's Historical Places by Keanna
Artist Note
New Bern, North Carolina is a very unique small historic town in the eastern part of the state. This statement makes me ask the question, how can we as local authors and artists, use our work to show the world the uniqueness of our community? Though my community shares many of the same features of small town America; however there are over one hundred and fifty sites in the National Register of Historic Places. I believe we can show the world just how unique we are through the different talents of our local authors and artists using different mediums.
New Bern boasts as a first in many accomplishments. For instance, home to the first Roman Catholic Church and parish in North Carolina, home to the first state capital of North Carolina, Tryon Palace, and the first city in America to celebrate George Washington’s birthday. These are just a few of the many first accomplishments this community is known for. This community holds it historic sites to heart. This community has gone to great measures to notate every historic site possible.
I had many thoughts of how to majestically captivate visually by using imagery in my work. Finally, I decided a view into some of the historic sites in this community would be ideal. Tryon Palace is one of our most visited sites therefore I decided to create a collage of some of our historical sites in the shape of the palace.
As one views this collage, I hope that it stirs up a great desire to visit such a small town bursting with well preserved and documented rich history. This unique community is a must to visit some of North Carolina’s history.
