The place in Craven County that I think is most important to Craven County is Christ Episcopal Church. This church has not only affected my life but also the whole community of Craven County. It holds events like the Pumpkin Patch, Cookie Walk, and helps host the Mumfest. The church itself is also very historical and has played a big part in Craven County’s history.
Christ Church is the first church in New Bern and was founded in 1715. It is a Episcopal church and one of the nine churches in the Province of North Carolina at that time. It’s first rector was the Rev. James Reed. Reed remained loyal to England during the Revolutionary war and the church didn't support some of his actions. The church was destroyed during the revolution, was built again in 1824, but then that building was destroyed by a fire in 1871. In 1873 it was rebuilt and it still stands today. The church has been renovated a few times but the original architecture and structure still remains. The church is still in use today and it a major church in the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Carolina.
In 1871 there was a fire which burned the church down. On January 10, 1871 the Reverend Edward M. Forbes resigned as rector of Christ Church and later that night a bakery caught fire across the street and spread to the church causing it to go up in flames. All that remained of the church was a few thick brick walls and everything else was destroyed. In 1873 the new church was done and is still standing today with bricks that survived dating back to 1824.
Christ Church also acted in the Revolutionary war. The first rector James Reed was very loyal to the crown and refused to do anything the rebelling congress told him to do which the church's vestry didn’t like so they suspended him for a few months and two years after they reinstated him James Reed died. After Reed died in 1777 the church kind of died out until 1796 when the Reverend Thomas Pitt Irving became rector and served until 1813. He was also the principal of the New Bern Academy which made him really busy.
Christ Church also had a part in the civil war. The church had a confederate rector in 1858 who went to be a chaplain in the confederate army. New Bern fell to Union troops on March 14, 1862 and Christ Church was used by the Union army throughout the war. During the war many Newberians moved out so Christ Church did not have much of a congregation.
I’ve been a member of Christ Church for my whole life and it’s really an amazing church. I’ve grown up in it and can call it one of my homes. The people there are really nice and the priests there are amazing. They are also very active in the Episcopal church as a whole. They are one of the biggest churches in the Diocese of East Carolina in size and also in the amount of people. Their previous rector was also head of one of the five deaneries that make up the diocese before he left. Right now they are in a bit of a transition but they’ll soon come out stronger than ever.
This church is also a big part in the Craven County community. They host the big pumpkin patch downtown during the Mumfest which is a great thing for the entire community. They also have a cookie walk in December which is where thousands of cookies are laid out on tables and picked up in boxes for people to buy. Last year they had about $10,000 dollars made from this event.
So Christ Church is not only a part of my life but of the community as well. They have a wonderful history and a wonderful involvement in Craven county. This is why I think Christ Church is an important part in Craven County.

I choose to do my submission on Christ Church because its been a part of my life ever since I was born. I have a strong to connection to it and to me it is one of the places that makes Craven County special. If I hadn't been a part of Christ Church my life would be a whole lot different. Through this church it has led me to become a part of the Episcopal Church as a whole which has been amazing. This church defines part of Craven County because of the work it does toward the community and it's history. Christ Church has been known for the events like the Cookie Walk and the Pumpkin Patch for a long time and those events really show what sense of community the church has. They also have a very unique history and have artifacts to prove it. The church is almost 300 years old and has a bible that King George gave to the church that is one of 12 in the world. Along with the bible he gave silver that is about 300 years old and pure silver.
I think craven county means home to me. I've always lived and went to school in Craven County and I think I will remember it when I leave for college in a few years. I'm very involved in the Theater programs the community has too offer and that is another thing that means Craven County to me, community.
