Havelock Middle Band by Brandon
When I was 11½ I joined the 6th grade. I also joined the band program, taught by Mr. Jim Boyce. In the beginning, I was a drummer. I learned from Mr. Boyce like he was my only choice, because he actually was, and I actually didn't learn much. I only learned the position I was supposed to do, and how to read music. That was about it. The only time that I got to use my drum in the 6th Grade, was at the winter and spring concerts.
The next year when I got into the 7th Grade Mr. Boyce was transferred to somewhere in middle NC. Our new band teachers name was Mr. Lorek. I liked him, he separated the percussionists from the wind instruments so he could focus on us. when he came he gave us difficult pieces to play for Festival and the winter concert. We would practice every day the same three or four song until perfection. We played the same music from the winter concert at Festival. When we went to Festival, we won Superior ratings for the 7th and 8th Grade, the daily practice paid off, we went home, and started on our spring concert songs. We played the three songs from Festival and we also played two or three other songs as well. I forgot the songs that we played though. But I do know that Mr. Lorek gave us songs that would be kind-of difficult. Not the kind that you rage quit, but they challenged our skill.
When I got in the 8th Grade, we, straight out of the frying pan, got new pieces to work on. Personally, I really didn't care. It gave me something to look forward to in the day.just like the past year we got pieces for the winter concert and Festival, we played the first concert, then went to Festival. When we were at the mall that we go to for an hour before we go to the concert, I got my Pittsburgh Steelers lanyard. We played at the Festival and got Superiors AGAIN. After that we went home, got our spring concert music, and played the concert.
I was planning to join the concert band at the high school down the road from the middle school, until I heard about the Early College Program. I told my mother and she signed me up without me knowing. When she told me I got in, I felt kind of lied to, but she did it so I wouldn't feel bad if I didn't get accepted. If it wasn't for my mother, I wouldn't have the privilege I have now.

Havelock Middle has left an impression on my life because I joined band, took Algebra 1 in 8th Grade, and simply because I went to middle school there. I want people to see that HMS is a good place with awesome extracurricular things besides the football team. If I wasn't accepted to CEC, I would be in symphonic band right now playing percussion. Because I love music, and a lot of people think the same way I do on this subject.
