Director's Note:
Craven County, to me, is home and it always has been (for the whole of my measly fourteen years). Craven County isn't just some place for old people who can't or don't want to work anymore; it actually has a sizeable population of children and young adults like me. Craven County has history that is hard to find anywhere else. I chose to focus on New Bern because that is where I've lived all my life and it has so much history to offer. Children can go on a painted bear hunt, and adults can enjoy the historic churches, houses, and many other types of places there are to visit. We have all the conveniences of a big city, while maintaining that small-town charm. I love New Bern because it is a “friendly” place to live, where people don't mind talking to strangers and help each other out every chance they get. But back to the history. Pretty much everywhere you go in New Bern, there will be some sort of historic significance near you; New Bern is practically bursting at the seams with all sorts of old stories to tell, if you just listen to the voices of years past.
My inspiration for this project came from curiosity. When I was in elementary school, I'd always try to find out as much as I could about how big events (such as the Civil War) had affected the ways of life in New Bern; how they related to me through living in this town. I was connected to the past throughout my life by being in tune with New Bern and the history it is soaked in. I decided to take this opportunity and show others what New Bern has to offer in terms of connecting to the past, learning about where we came from and why we're here, and also in terms of remembering our ancestors and all the great things they did. New Bern is also known by some of the locals as “Town of the Firsts” with roughly 36 things we were the first in, such as the first landmine that was used functionally being invented here.
I think this video shows the rich history of New Bern thoroughly and gives the viewers a chance to see why New Bern is so special. Since New Bern is special and significant, Craven County is also special because it contains New Bern. Although the video shows the historical sites, nothing compares to actually being able to see them in person. I feel privileged to call New Bern and Craven County my home, and hope you enjoy the glimpse into some of my hometown's history I have given you.
Sincerely,
Emily
